Swiss Experiment, or SwissEx: an attempt to enable effective real-time environmental monitoring through wireless sensor networks and a common, modern, generic cyber-infrastructure. This infrastructure will be used to work efficiently and collaboratively in finding the key mechanisms in the triggering of natural hazards and efficiently distribute the information to increase public awareness.

Swiss Experiment consists of two distinct work packages:

SwissEx Technology SwissEx Science
Development of innovative hardware and software technologies and their implementation for collaborative environmental research. Use of novel hardware and software technologies to enable improved hazard warning techniques.
  • An integrated, generic metadata and data storage solution with advanced metadata-based data manipulation and tagging (openly available for public usage).
  • Self organising sensor networks with advanced in-network processing solutions.
  • Development of existing sensors to take advantage of the latest in technology.
  • Usage of the advanced storage and query technologies developed under SwissEx to provide integration of sensors and models for hazard warning.
  • Usage of new sensors and sensor networks to provide measurements on an unprecedented spatial and temporal scale.
  • Localised extreme wind and precipitation assessments using the technologies above from data storage through precipitation forecasts and national forecast data, modified in real-time by in-situ assessments.

The technologies within Swiss Experiment are not only available to SwissEx partners. Although we cannot provide a great deal of support to external projects, we actively welcome you to use the infrastructure described in this wiki (which we have tried to keep as open as possible) and benefit from what we have produced. We also welcome external queries about the sensor technology based projects.
