Visp region, Central Valais

The central Valais is a continental inner-Alpine mountain area sensitive to drought (temperature and precipitation) – this area is suitable to study the dynamics and biodiversity of montane and subalpine protection forests and grasslands and their interrelations to disturbances (fire, insects, pathogens) under climate change. The study area Visp region (cf. Fig. 2) includes the Saas-valley (Saas Fee, Stalden), the region around Visp in the main valley and the Baltschieder-valley with a total area of 351.8 km2 and 15'346 inhabitants. Visp is a booming urban hot spot with industries and international traffic corridors. Saas Fee and Visperterminen are important destinations for summer and winter tourism. The Baltschieder-valley is a remote alpine side-valley with no infrastructure and no inhabitants. Agriculture has still a relevance as a sideline (beside other incomes). The forests have a crucial role in protecting inhabitants and infrastructure from natural hazards, as recreation area and habitat for plants and wildlife. The project is building upon existing research infrastructure such as several meteo stations, a long-term forest ecosystem monitoring plot at Visp and an experimental plot at Stalden. At the nearby Leuk area additional research infrastructure is at our disposal: an irrigation experiment (2003-2009), a rain shelter experiment (2008-2011), an experimental gradient on a forest fire area (2003-2013+) and a long-term forest ecosystem monitoring plot at Lens. A collaboration with the CCES-project TRAMM (research sites "Vispa-valley" and "Illgraben") and the SwissEx is planned for data mining and the technical maintenance of the research infrastructure.
